The Difference Between Crossovers and SUVs

Crossovers and SUVs may have similar wheelbases and ride heights, but otherwise, they’re completely different vehicles. In this article, we’ve explained the differences between crossovers and traditional SUVs.

What Is a Crossover?

A crossover is a type of vehicle that has two or more rows of seats and is designed to meet the needs of people who need more space than a sedan can offer but don’t need the off-road capabilities of an SUV. These vehicles often have the extra ground clearance for added traction in rough terrain, but they’re not built for serious off-roading as much as SUVs are.

What Is an SUV?

An SUV is a type of vehicle that includes several different styles of vehicles but generally has four-wheel drive capability and extra ground clearance for better traction on rough terrain. The term “sports utility vehicle” was first used in 1984 by Toyota when it introduced its 4Runner model. SUVs were originally designed for off-road use, so they’re able to handle rough terrain without getting stuck or damaged. Many SUVs can also haul and tow for short distances (although not as well as pickup trucks can).

How They Differ

Practicality: Crossovers are often more practical than traditional SUVs. They’re lower to the ground, which makes them easier to get in and out of, and they’re better for city driving because they’re smaller and lighter than 4x4s.

Fuel efficiency: Crossovers also tend to be more fuel-efficient than SUVs because their engines are smaller and more efficient than larger ones found in traditional 4x4s. Crossovers are also smaller and lighter, and this increases their fuel efficiency.

Cargo space: Crossovers don’t offer much more in terms of cargo space than traditional sedans or hatchbacks because they’re so much smaller overall. However, some do come with folding rear seats that can increase cargo capacity when needed — at least enough for three passengers’ luggage, if not more passengers themselves! In terms of cargo space, SUVs are a better choice because they have a considerably larger rear area that can be used to stow all kinds of cargo.
